VW Osnabrück: Ensure the quality of bolting processes

    With the CAQ solution QS-Torque of CSP, correct fastenings may be proven with closely-meshed samples on the basis of the breakaway torque

    As part of the quality assurance, bolting processes are inspected in particular at VW Osnabrück. QS-Torque, the CAQ solution of CSP GmbH & Co. KG, plays a major role in this inspection: The breakaway torques of a total of 1,500 individual tests per shift are documented, analyzed and archived with the software. For the fastenings where safety is especially critical, this means that a consistent quality on the basis of individual data per sample can be guaranteed in the manufactured vehicles. VW Osnabrück seeks to properly document their own process capability. The fastenings of safety class A and B pursuant to VDI guideline 2682 (Guideline by the Association of German Engineers) are the focus here.


    In three production lines, VW Osnabrück manufacturers the vehicles VW Golf Convertible, Porsche Cayman and Porsche Cayenne, where QS-Torque is being employed. In this VW plant, the software works together with the modern, flexible test device torque wrench model “Freedom3” of SCS. About 250 vehicles roll off the line every day.


    Analysis process monitoring QS-TorqueThe use of QS-Torque and the high density of samples is the result of internally defined quality standards of VW on the one hand and of the requirements of the technical guidelines on the other hand. Moreover, this comprehensive documentation also meets the stipulations by the lawmakers for a controlled production.


    In total, 13 workers use the software at VW Osnabrück. Four of them are permanently occupied actively with the solution. The user rights can be specifically and individually assigned with QS-Torque. This means that the solution provides for the possibility to provide individual workers only with the rights to read data from the test device torque wrenches and to analyze them with QS-Torque. Other employees, however, have administration rights, enabling them to also program the solution and change the settings.


    All in all, operation of the software is simple and intuitive, a fact that many users appreciate. Support from the manufacturer is rarely needed. If there were problems at any time, they could always be solved very fast with the support by telephone. Even the connection of new test device torque wrenches could be managed quickly and smoothly.


    Group leader Norbert Siepker, who is responsible for the bolting technology and WI installation , says: „A huge plus of QS-Torque is that, at the end of 2013, the new generation of test device torque wrenches could be introduced so quickly and easily with this solution. We were able to keep our familiar software and at the same time raise tool inspection to a new level.“


    VW Osnabrück also uses the possibility to analyze bolting trace data with QS-Torque. The software’s complementary trace module is employed here. The trace data, which has been collected by the test device torque wrenches, are put on top of each other on the screen and then analyzed in order to detect and remedy any possible errors even faster.
